From Desert Trails to Ocean Views: My Baja Peninsula Cruise Adventure

From Desert Trails to Ocean Views: My Baja Peninsula Cruise Adventure

In January 2023, I boarded a Princess Cruise Line sailing aboard the Diamond Princess for a seven-day Baja Peninsula and Sea of Cortez itinerary, roundtrip from San Diego. This was my very first cruise, and as an international adventure travel advisor, I wanted to experience cruise life through the eyes of a first-timer. I arrived with excitement—and a healthy dose of anxiety—and left with confidence and insight.

Embarkation & First Impressions

Embarkation was smooth, and by the time I joined the sailaway party at Skywalkers Nightclub, my nerves began to melt away. My stateroom on Deck 5 (P233) was cosy—tight, really - with about a foot and a half between two single beds. The beds weren’t the most comfortable, but the ship’s amenities more than made up for it. I enjoyed my first dinner in the Santa Fe Dining Room and began to settle into cruise life.

Ports of Call & a Weather Twist

Loreto was on the itinerary, and I had booked a horseback ride along the beach. Weather cancelled tendering, so the ship rerouted to Mazatlán, where I explored on foot and soaked in the local charm.
Cabo San Lucas was pure adrenaline. I joined a side-by-side off-road adventure through desert sand and shallow water crossings. By the end of the day, I was covered in sand and grinning from ear to ear.
La Paz offered a slower pace. I wandered the waterfront and neighbourhoods on foot, letting the relaxed vibe carry the day.

Life Onboard: Lessons & Laughs

Cruising was a new rhythm for me. I indulged in soft-serve ice cream, learned buffet restraint, and enjoyed a few cocktails without buying the drink package. I purchased internet to stay connected with family and manage business emails.
I discovered hidden gems like the spa’s steam room and aromatherapy showers - free perks that felt luxurious. Evenings brought comedy shows, casino fun, and my favourite ritual: Movies Under the Stars, wrapped in a blanket with popcorn under the night sky.
I learned:
• Formalwear isn’t required, but dressing up adds fun
• Drink packages aren’t for everyone
• Seasickness remedies are reassuring, but you might not need them
• Explore the ship - some perks are free!
Most importantly, my fears didn’t define me - they melted away as I settled into cruise life. This cruise didn’t end up being my last.
