From Saltwater Firsts to Havana Nights: My Cuban Adventure

From Saltwater Firsts to Havana Nights: My Cuban Adventure
From Saltwater Firsts to Havana Nights: My Cuban Adventure

In March 2023, I set off for my first-ever trip to Cuba - a two-part adventure that would take me from the beaches of Varadero to the vibrant streets of Havana. The first week was spent at IberoStar Playa Alameda, an all-inclusive resort set on Varadero’s famous white-sand beach. With its tropical gardens, ocean views, and lively pool scene, it was the perfect backdrop for a week of sun, sisterhood, and laughter with the WindSisters motorcycle group. The second week was a cultural deep dive with my cousin Vickie in Havana. What I didn’t expect was how this trip would challenge my perspective and leave me with lessons I’ll never forget.

Varadero: Sun, Saltwater, and Sisterhood

Varadero greeted me with turquoise waters and endless white sand - a postcard come to life. This was my first time in saltwater, and I quickly learned how to manage the waves that knocked me over. Lesson learned: respect the ocean!
One of the highlights was horseback riding on the beach. For the first time ever, I rode bareback in the ocean, feeling the power of the horse and the cool saltwater splashing against my legs. It was exhilarating and unforgettable.
Back at the resort, our days were filled with laughter and poolside fun. We floated on blow-up floaties, sipping cocktails from our oversized “BUBBAS” - giant sippy cups that became our signature accessory. We even learned a new game: Left Right Centre, played in the pool for dollar bills. I didn’t win, but I walked away with new friendships and a sunburn that told the story of a week well spent.
We also explored Varadero town, wandering through the local street market. I picked up Cuban memorabilia and added a fridge magnet to my growing collection - a tradition that started here and continues to this day.

Havana: Culture, Colour, and Cabaret

When the WindSisters flew home, my cousin Vickie and I headed to Havana for a week of history and culture. Our hotel was right on the famous Malecón, the city’s iconic seaside promenade. From there, we dove into Havana’s heart:
Old Havana with its UNESCO-listed colonial architecture and historic squares
• A classic car ride and a spin in a bright yellow coco taxi (the “little lemon”)
• The imposing El Morro fortress overlooking Havana Bay
• The ornate Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón, where we learned stories of grave robbers
• The whimsical mosaic wonderland of Fusterlandia

• A lively tango and cabaret show with dinner, music, and costumes that stole the spotlight
And then there was the cigar and rum tour. I’m not a drinker, but I surprised myself by tasting Cuban rum - and loving a 12-year-old variety straight. I even bought a cigar to bring home, a little piece of Cuba to remember the experience.

Culture Shock and Gratitude

Cuba was beautiful, but it was also humbling. I had never seen poverty like this before. We struggled with some of the food at the resort, but quickly realized that locals had far less. Learning about the extremely low salaries and how far a dollar stretches in Cuba was eye-opening.
One moment stands out: a local friend of a friend took us out for lunch. Later, we learned they had waited eight hours in line for fuel just to drive to meet us. That kind of effort - and generosity - left me speechless. Despite the hardships, every person we met was warm, welcoming, and determined to make sure we had a good time.
This trip taught me gratitude. It reminded me how privileged life at home is and how easy it is to take it for granted.

Lessons and Takeaways

Cuba gave me more than memories - it gave me perspective. It taught me to embrace new experiences, respect cultural differences, and appreciate resilience. If you’ve ever dreamed of riding a horse along a tropical beach, dancing to live music in Havana, or discovering a culture that will change how you see the world, Cuba is calling.
